Wrestlers win first invitational of the season

The Rogers City varsity wrestling team competed at the Manton Invitational Saturday. The Hurons wrestled well and won the twelve-team tournament. T.J. Sobeck wrestled just two matches en route to an individual championship at 119 pounds. Sobeck won his first match by pin in 2:13, and defeated Zeke Daman from Charlevoix in the finals 12-8.

Tharin Wilk won three matches to earn first place at 135 pounds. Wilk won his first match by technical fall, 22-3, his second by an 8-2 decision, and his championship match by pin in 1:50. Chase McLennan pinned two opponents and won in the finals, 7-6, to grab first place at 189 pounds. Michael Vogler and Devin Pommerenke gained second place honors at 125 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Placing in third place for the Hurons were Leilani Kortman (112) Dustin Hein (145), Jerome Gapczynski (171), and Derek Schleben (215). Fourth place honors went to Alex Matthews (130) and Ben Tulgestke (140). Travis Fleis (103) and Shoua Xiong (152) bot

h won their first varsity matches at Manton and contributed to the team?s first place finish. ?I was very impressed with Michael Vogler and Ben Tulgestke who came from unseeded positions to place 2nd and 4th, respectively,? said coach Pat Lamb. Last Wednesday the Hurons wrestled against Petoskey and St. Ignace in Petoskey. The Hurons came up short in the dual with Petoskey, losing 40-32, then came out to beat St. Ignace 40-29.

Against Petoskey the match was close the entire way, and things could have gone either way. In the match with St. Ignace the Hurons were down 20-0 but rallied back to win the match.

Double winners in Petoskey were: Tharin Wilk (135), Jerome Gapczynski (171), Chase McLennan (189), Derek Schleben (215) and Devin Pommerenke (285). Leilani Kortman (112), T.J. Sobeck (119), Alex Matthews (130) and Dustin Hein (145) went 1-1 at the tri-meet. Earning their first varsity wins for the team were Leilani Kortman and Devin Pommerenke.
