Viegelahn officially announces his candidacy

It was inevitable. Howard Viegelahn didn?t participate and walk in all three of Presque Isle County?s major parades last year just for his health. Viegelahn, an agri-business farmer from the Rogers City area, has filed with the Michigan Secretary of State as a Republican candidate for State Representative for the 106th District, which includes Presque Isle, Alpena, Oscoda, Montmorency, Crawford, and Alcona.

Viegelahn, a life-long resident, is a small business owner who is pledging to bring back jobs to northeast Michigan. As a fiscal conservative, Viegelahn does not believe that raising taxes is the solution to resurrecting Michigan?s economy.

?BUDGETING FOR our state should not be the long, drawn-out process the legislature has made it,? he explained. It is a matter of considering expected revenues and weighing that against planned expenditur

es. As a person with traditional values and extensive experience, Viegelahn believes he understands how northeast Michigan should be represented in Lansing. ?Agriculture is the second largest industry in Michigan,? said Viegelahn, ?and farmers deserve better representation in the Legislature.? Viegelahn believes he has a special sensitivity to the legislative process based on his longtime activity with the National Potato Council and the Michigan Potato Commission, where he has represented agricultural positions on several ?crucial issues? before a wide variety of members of the U.S. Congress and state legislatures.

His expertise on pesticides and environmental issues, as they apply to agriculture, is widely respected by his peers, he stated in a press releaseto the media today. He is also strongly pro-life. Viegelahn lost his bid for the 106th State Rep. seat in 2006 to Democrat Matt Gillard. The incumbent also took Presque Isle County, 3,321 to 2,930 votes.
