Huron wrestlers gear up for SAC tournament

The Hurons are coming off a rare weekend off and gearing up for the Straits Area Conference Tournament in Rudyard on Saturday. Seniors Tharin Wilk and Chase McLennan will defend their titles as conference champions. The team has won the conference for the last three seasons; this senior class will look to be four-year conference champions. Last Thursday the Hurons traveled to Newberry for a tri-meet with the Indians and the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils.

Against the Blue Devils the Hurons prevailed 44-27. Greg Tulgestke (112) pinned his opponent in 32 seconds. T.J. Sobeck followed with a pin in 12 seconds at 119 pounds. Keegan Urban earned a void at 125. The Hurons would drop the matches at 130 and 135 before Tharin Wilk, wrestling up at 140 pounds, won by pin in 3:54. At 152 pounds, Dustin Hein won by a major decision, 16-1. Seniors Chase McLennan (189) and Derek

Schleben (215) won their matches by pin. Freshman Devin Pommerenke won his match against the Upper Peninsula State Champion 3-0.

Wrestling the Newberry Indians, who fill only eight of the fourteen weight classes, the Hurons prevailed 57-18. Going undefeated on the day for the Hurons were: Greg Tulgestke (112), Sobeck (119), Wilk (135/40), Hein (145/52), McLennan (189), Schleben (215), Pommerenke (285) and Jacob Reisner, who won by void at 152 pounds against Newberry. Wrestlers going 1-1 on the day were: Ben Tulgestke (140/45) and Jerome Gapczynski (171) who lost his match against Sault Ste. Marie in overtime.

The Hurons are back in action Thursday at Whittemore-Prescott before the conference tournament in Rudyard Saturday. Next week the Hurons will look to win their 22nd consecutive District Title in Boyne City on Wednesday.
