Courthouse Cornerstone removed

The Onaway Courthouse cornerstone, which has been imbedded at the base of the landmark for 100 years, was removed in the last week to see if there is anything behind it, such as a time capsule, or if there is space for a future one which would be placed and opened in 2108.

Officially, city manager Joe Hefele is keeping things quiet. Le Cureux Construction pulled back the block to ensure something is behind it since a community event is in the works for the Fourth of July weekend.

While Hefele did not want to comment on what may/or may not be behind the cornerstone, more information will be forthcoming at Monday?s Onaway City Commission meeting at 5:30 p.m.

As of Wednesday afternoon, he wasn?t sure what he was going to say publicly. ?I haven?t even thought what my statement would be on that,? said Hefele.

The city and Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce plan on removing the cornerstone after the Fourth of July parade and opening the time capsule, which the 1908 Onaway Outlook states is there. Officials will read any documentation and go over items before putting them on display.

Leading up to the Fourth weekend, the community will be gathering new items to be placed into a 2008 time capsule.
