Hincka and Mulka named athletes of the year

Senior Jordan Hincka and junior Tina Mulka were honored as the Posen Viking athletes of the year at last Wednesday?s all-sports banquet. Hincka capped off a brilliant four-year career with great senior seasons on the football field as well as the basketball court. He was the leading tackler on the football team, gathering defensive player of the year and most valuable honors. On the basketball court he was a force to be reckoned with, scoring a single Viking season record 579 points en route to breaking the school scoring record with 1530 points in his career. Hincka never missed a basketball game, playing in all 93 games of his career.

Mulka plays basketball, volleyball and runs track for the Vikings who will have her back for her senior season in the fall. She was the rookie of the year on the basketball team as a point guard, won the spirit award as a member of the volleyball team, and was the most valuable mid-distance runner as well as most valuable team member of the track team. Seniors Ashley Sobeck and Paul Kroll were honored as the 2008 recipients of the Clifford J. Kelly scholarship. Each coach was given the opportunity to introduce their team, talk about their respective season and hand out their team awards.

Girl?s basketball coach Karl Momrik had the honor of going first. Sobek and sophomore Janice Ciarkowski were named as co-most valuable players. Sobek also earned most improved honors for her efforts to step up her game. Ciarkowski was also named offensive player of the year and leading rebounder. Victoria Wozniak was given the coaches award, Mulka was rookie of the year, Nicole Purol was the defensive player of the year as well as awarded the 6th man award and Kori Latz earned the title of free throw champion for the best free throw percentage on the team. Coach Glenn Budnick took to the stage to honor his football team, giving most valuable honors to Hincka while Nathan Street and Scott Couture earned most improved honors. Nicholas Delekta was given the coach?s award. The offensive player of the year was Paul Kroll and defensively, Hincka earned the award. Nick Idalski was honored as the lineman of the year.

Budnick stayed on stage and invited up his softball team to hand out their awards. Junior centerfielder Christina Bednarski was named most valuable, outfielder of the year and the leading hitter. Sobek earned most improved honors. Cheryl Romel was named infielder of the year while Lindsay Ponik and Leanne Buczkowski earned rookie of the year honors. The softball team was also honored as academic all-state for the ninth straight season. Chuck Wozniak followed with the track team awards. Aleaha Reed and Michael Metivier earned most improved honors while most valuable player awards went to Nicole Purol, Mulka and Metivier. Sprinters of the year were Purol and Corey Hentkowski. Mulka and Hentkowski were named mid-distance runners of the year while Natasha Finley and Metivier were named field athletes of the year.

Latz was named the most valuable player of the Viking volleyball team coached by John Dietlin. Emily Smolinski gathered most improved honors for the team. Latz also won the blocking award for having the most blocks on the season. Wozniak and Beth King were honored as the digs award winners, Purol was honored for her serving prowess and Elyse Perrault took home the assists award. Mulka and Bonnie Schmitz were given the spirit award for their ongoing team spirit. Coach Steve Hentkowski stepped to the podium to hand out the boys? basketball awards, giving most valuable honors to Hincka and most improved honors to Delekta. ar. Hincka was offensive player of the year and the free throw champ, while Paul Kroll was defensive player of the year. Nathan Strzelecki was given the 6th man award and Deletka was the rebounding award winner. The coach?s award went to Deletka, Kroll and Hincka for their efforts in senior leadership. Baseball award wrapped up the sports awards with Nick Idalski gathering up the most valuable award for his catching contributions. Aaron Romel was named outfielder of the year and Justin LaPointe was infielder of the year. Tyson Klecha was named pitcher of the year while Shane Hentkowski was named rookie of the year.

The sports banquet wrapped up yet another successful Vikings sports season until the start of football in August. The final honors for some talented seniors were handed out. The season saw several North Star League (NSL) championships, NSL players of the year, academic all-state honors, and many other post season honors.
