Major girls win one and lose two in state Little League finals

The Rogers City Little League major girls all-star team won the district title in Onaway earning a trip to the state tournament in Mattawan where they went 1-2 over four days. Game one for the young ladies was Thursday against Mattawan. Rogers City took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but Mattawan would answer with two in the second to tie the game. Rogers City would add two in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Mattawan scored once in the fifth, which Rogers City answered with two more runs to win the game 6-3.

Ashley Meyers earned the pitching win striking out three and giving up just three hits. Courtney Streich was 2-3 to lead the offense. Meyers, Anna Couture and Cassie Brege each had one hit for Rogers City. The win set up a Friday game against Escanaba, one where Rogers City would be no-hit by the opposing pitcher in a 2-0 loss. Couture suffered the pitching loss despite giving up just five hits, one walk and striking out three.

In their final game of the double elimination tournament Rogers City would lose 5-2 to Croswell-Lexington in a game that was played over two days. The game was originally scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning but rain would delay its star

t until 5 p.m. After playing 4 and one-half innings, rain would come again delaying the final inning and a half until Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Meyers suffered the pitching loss despite giving up just four hits, striking out six and walking five. Logan Fleming and Brege each had two hits while Meyers and Abbie Delekta each had one hit.

?We could not get the key hit when we needed it, we stranded 12 runners on base,? said coach Donna Couture, ?Rogers City played excellent ball and tough competition. We were complimented by both the umpire and other coaches on the great bunch of kids we had and how well we played.?

MINOR GIRLS ? The minor girls all-star team saw their season come to an end at the hands of Cheboygan in a 9-4 loss last week after defeating Tahquamenon Falls on Wednesday evening by a score of 20-6 behind the pitching of Autumn Idalski.
