Boosters gear up for fall sports

As the first day of school approaches for the Rogers City Area Schools, the Huron Sports Boosters are continuing to prepare to help the athletic program. Twenty-six people attended Monday’s Boosters? meeting and heard reports from several committees on work they have been doing. Deb Schuiteman, concessions chair, said she has contacted suppliers for the various foods to be sold, and feels committee members and other volunteers will have things ready.

Members authorized allocation of start-up funds of $1,500 to purchase food and supplies. In addition, the Boosters voted to set a $200 limit for periodic purchases of food and supplies as needed. Two volunteers have been assigned to open and close the concession stands for each home junior varsity and varsity football game, as well as junior varsity and varsity volleyball home matches. Student athletes and parents will be working in the concession stands, as in the past.

Steve Calabrese, co-chair of the fundraising committee, said he has a list of fundraising ideas and will talk with committee members about them. He also will contact the owners of a local business about developing three types

of jackets that would have “Rogers City Sports Boosters” on them.

Jay Schuiteman, Boosters president, thanked those who helped with the power washing, priming and painting of the Gilpin Field bleachers last week. “They look excellent,” he said. “It just gave me goose bumps to see so many people helping out. It was phenomenal.” More than 50 people, including football players and coaches, turned out to assist in the project. He said some finishing work needs to be done, including touch-up painting and some repairs of bleachers. In addition, the concession stand is being painted.

It was agreed that regular Booster meetings would be scheduled the fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the high school, beginning on September 22. Because the committees seem to have their planning well under way, there will be no other full Boosters? meeting this month.
