Posen board hires new teachers

Students from Posen Consolidated School District No. 9 will notice some new faces on staff this fall, especially in the secondary wing. The board of education already added new custodian Jamie Szymanski and bus driver Gayle Wilk; but on Monday, they officially hired a couple of teachers. Amy Jones will teach Spanish and math, while Kristin Werth will be instructing Social Studies and English. It has been a few years since there have been any changes to the staff.

“All these people are fine additions to our staff,” stated superintendent Dru Milliron in a letter to parents and students, which went out in the mail August 11. Werth, a first-year teacher out of Spring Arbor, will teach U.S. history and world history, as well as English 8 and American government/social studies.

JONES, WHO is the wife of pastor Kevin Jones of Peace Lutheran Church, will teach three classes of Spanish I, as well as a couple of afternoon math classes. They were hired to help fill the shoes of retiring teachers Lou Ciarkowski and Mary Rubeo. Mike Grulke, the most senior member of the staff, will take over physical education classes, while Glenn Budnick takes over keyboarding. Rubeo handled both subjects during the last school year. In other personnel decisions, Betty Schellie was granted a medical leave of absences after suffering a fall at her house. Mary Ann Zakshesky rejoins the kitchen staff while she is out. The board approved the leave, but will need to clarify the length of her absence.

IN OTHER business:

? Milliron informed the board the district would be recei

ving $112 per student, which will give them $30,000. The board and administrators were cautious and didn’t budget for any increase. The additional funding will go back into the general fund. The student count is down by about 20 students compared to a year ago. It was at 254 on Monday, but could go up as the first day of school arrives September 2.

? Chuck Ritz, the owner of the Route 65 Diner, has offered to pay for the travel expenses of the Posen football team, so they can ride the bus together to Mio and Rogers City. Under the new sports travel guidelines, parents would have to transport the athletes.

? The election date for the district, as well as the time a new board takes office, have changed after the board passed a resolution. The school election will move from May to November to cut down expenses incurred. With additional precincts open, the costs nearly quadrupled. The term of a board member will now begin in January, meaning expiring terms will be extended by about six months.
