Vikes host only home game in six weeks Friday

A new season of football is about to begin Friday under the lights in Posen. First year head coach Wayne Karsten brings 21 players into the first contest of the season against a familiar season-opening opponent: Cedarville. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. The next home game won’t be for six weeks after Friday. They will host Hale, October 10. Cedarville is coming off some impressive regular season runs the last two years. Cedarville has defeated Posen three years in a row, but has lost some quality players to graduation.

So, both schools will have some similarities coming into the contest. The Vikings had a preseason scrimmage Tuesday against Engadine. Karsten said no scrimmage had been scheduled, but the Engadine coach made contact and the two decided the best day to do it was Tuesday. Engadine suited up 18. Karsten said there are some things to work on before the first game.

One of the cosmetic changes to the Posen football look will be the helmet. Gone will be the Viking horn from the side. They are being replaced with a white “P” outlined in black, similar to the look of Big Ten school Purdue. There will be Vikings horns available to top players but in smaller forms as pride stickers. It could be for making a lot of tackles, the big play, or just being at every practice.

Another piece of good news, speedster Cory Hentkowski and Brandon Wyman, a lineman, were finally in practice. They should provide some added depth. More information is available in the Fall Sports Special, which includes a team photo, enclosed in this edition of The Advance.
