Forest Township Park overhaul to continue this weekend

Work will continue at Forest Township Park this Saturday, as well as in the coming weeks, as local residents look to make it a community ?friendly gathering place again.

The facelift started in earnest as soon as the sun came up last Saturday morning, and work will continue through this weekend and into the coming weeks.

According to Jason Larson, who is spearheading the project as head of the Forest Township parks committee, was pleased with the work the volunteer crew of between 10 to 20 folks was able to complete.

A sprinkler system was installed, sod was laid on the infield and the outfield area has been stripped and is ready to be seeded. Larson was waiting for the delivery of ?special dirt? for the baseline areas today.

Work on the new basketball court and the 24-x-24 concession stand building are supposed to begin this weekend. The building is expected to be similar to the high school football game field concession stand/press box.

IT?LL HAVE eight-foot of split face block and a stairway to the second floor announcer?s booth. It?ll also have restrooms and a storage area. They would like to complete this portion of the project by mid-October. Work is also expected to begin on a four-foot tall fence encompassing the entire park.

?We are going to do it first class, a

nd do it right,? said Larson.

The ball field only started getting used again for competitive games a half dozen years ago when the Presque Isle County Men?s Softball Association started playing on the field, instead of the one Onaway team traveling to Rogers City to play a home game. The fences were moved back to meet the dimension-requirements and the field started getting used again.

The women?s league from Presque Isle County joined in a few years ago.

The ultimate goal is to establish a weekly co-ed softball league, with a six to eight team league playing every Friday in the summer.

Larson commended the Tower Tavern for providing lunch and the Black River Party Store for bringing the work crew some adult refreshments. He hopes to have more volunteers for the second straight weekend of major work.
