Garden Fair a part of a busy holiday weekend

Members of the Stepping Stones Garden Club conducted their fifth annual People?s Garden Fair during the Labor Day weekend on Maxon Field.

Some people made it part of an active day in Onaway, and didn?t have to burn too much gas. They could take in events in Onaway, hop over the Millersburg for Homecoming or stop at the many garage sales going on all over.

According to Leora Dean, a spokesperson for the Stepping Stone Garden Club (SSGC), the busiest time on Maxon Field was between 11 a.m. and noon. She believes, ?people made a day of it.? It is the third year they?ve had the event the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

THERE WERE about two dozen vendors, which included food booths, along with three different local groups entertaining people throughout the day. Activities also included kids? gam

es and an ?eco booth,? promoting recycling and other ?go green? initiatives. Non-perishable items were donated to the local food pantry to cover the vendor fee. Vendors were selling fresh produce, potted perennials and stepping stones, to name just a few of the items.

The SSGC conducted its fall bulb sales as a fundraiser for the many civic projects the group maintains, such as the gardens at Chandler Park, Onaway Courthouse, four ?Welcome Signs? and the Veterans? Memorial garden at the Onaway school building. The organization is currently working on installing an irrigation system at the school garden.

The names of the sunflower contest winners are as follows: Savanna Schultz, tallest; Caty Adair, largest head.
