Huron girls to face Hillman in opener

The Huron winter sports seasons begin with the girls? basketball teams heading to Hillman for games Tuesday. The JV starts at 6 p.m. while the varsity plays after the first game.

Varsity coach Paul Stempky has virtually an entire new team this season as juniors dominate the roster. Just two seniors, Anna Wickersham and Alicia Cornett, are on the roster while only one starter returns from last season, junior guard Greta Grambau.

Katie Tulgestke, who started at point guard last year, will likely miss the season recovering from knee surgery last month. She injured her left knee in the powder puff football game during homecoming week in October.

The only other player with significant varsity experience is junior Logan Schuiteman, brought up to the varsity for the district tournament at Harbor Springs. Others vying for playing time will be Sara Carpenter, Kelly Erfurdt, Samantha Hall, Jordyn Lamb, Leeann Knopf, Heather Luetzow and Amanda Lenard.

Junior varsity coach Karl Grambau has 12 players out for the team with 10 freshmen on the squad with two sophomores.

The teams host Onaway December 4 and travel to Newberry December 5. The Huron boys? teams start their season by hosting Posen December 8.
