Onaway a flourish with holiday activity the first week of December

by Angie Asam Staff Writer

As the holiday season is quickly approaching Onaway will be a flourish with activity in the first week of December, with three separate holiday events scheduled for the community to enjoy, beginning with the tree lighting ceremony in Chandler Park on Tuesday, December 2.

The annual tree lighting ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. with the lighting of the bonfire complete with free hot chocolate, candy canes and cookies. Santa Claus will arrive at 6:30 p.m. by fire truck and will have the honor of lighting the trees in the park to kick off the holiday season before he hands out candy canes and hears Christmas wish lists.

Trees are $30 and can be decorated to wish someone a Happy Holiday or as a memorial. Five larger trees are also available for $50. The lights will be strung on the trees before each person can take their time to personalize their tree. The trees will be lit every evening until January 2.

A private group started the Christmas tree lighting ceremony and the Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce took over the event three years ago.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Onaway High School will be the annual Onaway Community Choir Christmas concert and Saturday, December 6, from 4:30 until 10 p.m. will be the annual Moran bonfire and Christmas fireworks show.
