Community comes together for less fortunate

The Onaway Goodfellows program has been in existence since 1975 and has gotten bigger over the years. This year a tree at Tom?s Family Market held the names of 240 children who were in need of gifts this holiday season.

According to Terry Materna, almost all of the names were taken from the tree and every child whose name was on that tree will get a gift. Thursday evening the Goodfellows joined with other groups and individuals at St. Paul Catholic Church Hall to pack boxes with food and presents to be handed out this Saturday.

Materna coordinates the event with the help of the community, the J.D. Tucker Pistol Club, the schools, the churches and many other volunteers.

When the group first began they put together a newspaper to raise money to help the less fortunate; they no longer need to do that, or to really advertise at all according to Materna, who says people just keep giving and giving.
