Girls look for first win after losses to Onaway and Newberry; host Rudyard

The Huron girls had a week of practice to cut down on their turnovers. The squad dropped games to Onaway, 64-39, and Newberry, 59-30 on consecutive days last Thursday and Friday.

Rogers City (0-3) now faces Rudyard in a home game Friday and hosts Cedarville Tuesday in looking for their first win the season. Last Friday at Newberry, the Hurons looked rusty after a long bus ride, as Newberry jumped out to a 10-0 lead, aided by 10 Huron turnovers in the first five minutes of the game.

A free throw by Logan Schuiteman and single baskets by Sara Carpenter and Kelly Erfurdt, both off assists by Jordyn Lamb, were the only points for the Hurons as Newberry led 16-5 after one period.

A TOUGH Newberry defense kept the Hurons from notching any field goals in the second quarter. Schuiteman again provided the only offense when she nailed two free throws with 6:47 left in the second quarter. Newberry?s long-range game shot over a tight Huron zone defense to run up a 35-7 lead at halftime.

Rogers City had a bit of a rally in the third period, sparked by the outside shooting of junior guard Greta Grambau who connected for seven points. Leanne Knopf had two baskets and Grambau added one to cut the lead to 44-21 at the end of the third quarter.

Schuiteman led the team with nine points while Grambau added seven and Anna Wickersham and Knopf each had four.

AGAINST ONAWAY December 4, the Hurons had difficulty breaking the Cardinal press and trouble stopping Onaway?s guards. Senior Hayley O?Meara scored 25 and junior Allie Nave added 15 in a Cardinal win on the Hurons? home court.

Onaway took away any thoughts of a Huron upset by scoring the first 11 points of the fourth quarter Schuiteman had 12 points, 10 coming in the third quarter while Grambau added six and Carpenter had five.

THE HURON J.V. team split a pair of games last week, earning their first win of the season in Newberry. Freshman forward Becky Talaske?s 19 points paced the Hurons to a 33-29 win. Rogers City led 10-6 after one quarter, 16-11 at halftime and 27-19 after three. Shelby Schelben had six points while Kelleigh Lamb and Erika Kuznicki each scored four points.

The Hurons fell behind 8-0 after one quarter and lost 44-23 to Onaway. Rogers City cut the lead to 26-17 after three quarters. Talaske had eight points while Abbey Idalski added five and Kelleigh Lamb had four points. Sammy Freel had 14 points and Raquel Moran had 13 for Onaway.
