Hurons take fourth at St. Ignace

On a day where the Hurons filled only 10 of the 14 weight classes, the team came together to take fourth place out of 11 teams in the St. Ignace Invitational on Saturday. Joey Sobeck (103) and Devin Pommerenke (285) both went 3-0 to earn championship honors in their weight classes.

Sobeck, a freshman, won all three of his matches via the pin in the first period to improve to 9-1 on the season and win his first championship as a Huron. Sophomore Pommerenke continued his dominance as the number-one ranked wrestler in the state recording three pins. His record now stands at 10-0 winning all of his matches via the pin.

Coach Pat Lamb was pleased with the Hurons effort and fourth-place finish with 116 points. Gladstone won the invitational with 159, St. Ignace was second with 157.5 and Sault Ste. Marie was third with 130.

?The young men on the team really improved from their previous performances, they continue to work extremely hard and have terrific attitudes,? said coach Lamb. At 130-pounds sophomore Keegan Urban wrestled very tough at St. Ignace losing only in the finals to place second.

Travis Fleis (112) and Cameron Wilk (125) each went 3-1 on the day to earn third-place honors for the Hurons.

e both 2-2 on the day finishing in fourth place. Other Hurons who competed Saturday were seniors Luke Ryan (140), Travis Lafferty (119) and Jim Tomas (171).

LAST WEDNESDAY at home, the Hurons fell to both St. Ignace (45-36) and Petoskey (56-24) in a tri-meet.

Going 2-0 for the Hurons were Sobeck (103), Fleis (112) and Pommerenke (285). Urban (130), Ben Tulgestke (152), Jacob Reisener (160) and Mike Pacella (215) were each 1-1 on the day for the Hurons.

Also wrestling for the Hurons were Lafferty (119), Wilk (125), Greg Tulgestke (135), Luke Ryan (140), Blaise Ryan (145) and Tomas (171).

THE HURONS traveled to Oscoda for a quad meet on Wednesday evening and will be at the Marquette Challenge this Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Challenge features many ranked wrestlers and good teams and should prove to be a tough test for the young Hurons.
