Vikes look for better luck out of town

The Viking boys’ basketball will hope for a little better luck outside of Presque Isle County in search of win No. 1.

After opening the season with a close loss at Rogers City, the Vikes (0-2, 0-1) returned home for their first North Star League matchup and lost, 69-42, to Au Gres.

“We played all right in the first quarter, as it was tied 11-11,” said head coach Steve Hentkowski. “We were hitting the shots when we needed to and getting some good looks. Our easy layups were going in. Then, after that, the wheels fell off.”

HENTKOWSKI SAID, as the game progressed, the shots weren’t falling, even though the open looks were there.

The Wolverines opened up the scoring in the second quarter, 22-9. The third quarter was a little closer at 15-11, but the gap widened further in the fourth, as Au Gres outscored them by 10.

Hentkowski said his squad had 21 turnovers, which isn’t going to help keep them in many games.

Shane Hentkowski continued his hot start with 18 points. Next in line was S

cott Couture with 10.

Aaron Romel and Hentkowski each had six rebounds each, while Tyson Klecha cleaned the glass five times.

Travis Byard had 21 for the Wolverines.

MONDAY’S GAME at Fairview was canceled and rescheduled for January 5 at Fairview. Before that there are a couple of more road games of 90 plus miles at Twining tonight and at Oscoda tomorrow (Friday). It is the only game this season against the Owls. The J.V. had a rough outing against Au Gres in an 83-47 loss. Kohl Stowe was the leading scorer with 13, while Jacob Boyke and Jerome Ciarkowski both had a dozen each.

Travis Hirschman had 11 boards. Zack Idalski collected eight.
