Posen held Rogers City scoreless in the second quarter on the way to a 46-25 win at Rogers City High School Monday. The Vikings pressured the Hurons into turnovers on the defensive side while distributing the ball to the open person on the offensive end to build the lead.

The Vikings went up 3-0 on their first possession, as senior guard Tina Mulka drained a three-pointer, and from that point the Vikings never trailed. Following another three by Mulka, and pair of free throws by Janice Ciarkowski, the Hurons would score for the last time in the first half.

Alycia Cornett?s pass set up Jordyn Lamb?s layup with 36 seconds left in the first quarter. With the score 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Hurons went as cold as the weather outside.

MEANWHILE, POSEN (9-1) ran off the next 14 points to lead 26-8 at the half. ?We intensified the defense a little bit in the quarter. We were giving up some high post shots and they were pretty successful in the first quarter. We needed to get to the high post a little quicker, and we did,? said Posen coach Karl Momrik.

?We moved the ball real well and we took good shots. We are pretty happy with our performance tonight.?

Momrik said the Vikings have played well defensively this season, holding opponents to 30 points or less in 7-of-10 games.

Posen ran the backdoor play to perfection late in the second quarter. Sophomore Lindsay Ponik cut to the bucket and senior guard Victoria Wozniak hit her in stride for an easy bucket at the two-minute mark.

COACH PAUL STEMPKY?s Hurons came out with resolve in the third quarter, scoring on their first two possessions. Greta Grambau stole a pass and drove for a layup and then Logan Schuiteman?s steal set up Grambau for another easy shot.

The teams traded hoops the rest of the third quarter, which ended with the Vikings leading 41-20.

?The second half we played even with them. We just didn?t have out feet set on our shots and I thought they rushed a little when they were shooting it. But overall, we had a lot of open looks at the bucket and we moved the ball the way we wanted to,? Stempky said. ?We have just had a bad quarter in every game. We have got to shake that to be able to win some games. I think once we do that we are going to be just fine.?

THE VIKING AND Huron junior varsity teams fought it out in the first game of the night. Rogers City prevailed in a 23-20 win.

The teams were tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter and Rogers City (3-7) held a slim 10-9 lead in a turnover-plagued second quarter.

Becky Talaske scored five of her game-high nine points in the fourth quarter for the Hurons. Kelleigh Lamb added six points for Rogers City. For Posen (7-3), Leann Strzelecki and Judy Romel each had six while Emily Delekta scored four.

LAST THURSDAY, the Huron varsity (1-9) lost 47-33 to Cheboygan. Rogers City trailed 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and 28-17 at halftime. Cold shooting in the third quarter cost the Hurons as they managed only a late bucket from Cornett in a 15-2 Cheboygan run.

Grambau and Schuiteman each had seven points while Anna Wickersham added six. The Hurons went to the free throw line just five times, connecting on only two.

Courtney Hancock scored 18 to lead Cheboygan, who made 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.

THE HURON J.V. fell way behind early but outscored the Chiefs in the second half in a 41-26 loss. Trailing 34-4 midway through the third quarter, the Hurons outscored Cheboygan 22-7 the rest of the way.
