Hurons host Inland Lakes next week in final home game of year

The Rogers City High School varsity girls? basketball team was unable to overcome a pair of 11-0 Cardinal spurts in Tuesday night?s 63-41 loss at Onaway.

Junior forward Samantha Hall scored the game?s first basket on a drive to the hoop a minute in. After Onaway tied things, Hall split a pair of free throws, giving the Hurons what would be their final lead of the game.

Hayley O?Meara, who finished with 20 points for the home team, knocked down a jumper to put the Cardinals up 4-3, a lead that would grow to 18-5 when Onaway scored the final 11 points of the first period.

RC FOUGHT BACK, finishing the second quarter on an 8-2 run with O?Meara seated on the bench with three fouls. A Hall trifecta keyed the run, which cut the Cardinal lead to 30-22 at the half.

The Hurons suffered a huge blow when Hall picked up her fourth and fifth fouls in the opening 30 seconds of period three, forcing her to the bench for the rest of the game. Onaway took advantage, scoring the first 11 points of the third to stretch its lead to 19 and remove all doubt as to the game?s outcome. RC never got closer than 13 the rest of the way, and the Cards led 49-31 after three.

When O?Meara scored, was fouled, made the free throw, then hit another jumper following a Huron turnover, the lead ballooned to a game-high 24. Shortly thereafter, both teams emptied their benches.

Greta Grambau paced the Huron attack with 13 points, while Logan Schuiteman chipped in with nine. Allie Nave and Payton Lupu scored 10 points apiece for the Cardinals. Earlier in the evening, the Huron JV fell to its OHS counterpart, 49-16. Onaway led 17-2 after one period and 27-4 at the half. Amanda Smolinski led the Hurons with six points. Kate Chapman scored18 for the Cards.

Soo led 16-8 after the first quarter and 28-13 at halftime.

With only six players available for a make-up game at Cedarville Saturday, the Hurons lost 85-23. Cedarville rarely missed a shot as they ran up a 31-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained a 52-17 halftime lead.

With Anna Wickersham at the game, but unable to play because of a leg injury, coach Paul Ste

mpky rotated the six able to play. The six juniors getting all of the minutes were Grambau, Hall, Luetzow, Logan Schuiteman, Jordyn Lamb and Sara Carpenter.

Hall had 13 points for the Hurons while Schuiteman added four. All-state candidates Jessie Duncan had 31 while Billie McLeod added 21 for Cedarville. THE JV TEAM led in during the third quarter of both their games last week, but came away empty, losing to the Soo and in Cedarville.

Becky Talaske scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the 51-37 loss to Sault Ste. Marie. Soo led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter and 21-14 at the half.

Against Cedarville, Rogers City trailed 14-11 at halftime, led briefly in the third quarter but lost 40-28 to the Soo. Amanda Smolinski scored 12 and Erika Kuznicki added seven.
