A tall and talented Rudyard basketball team stormed into Rogers City Monday and left with an 83-52 win over the Hurons. Using an aggressive pressure defense, the Bulldogs forced a host of turnovers in the opening minutes and made things worse for Rogers City by connecting on nearly all of their shots. What they didn?t make on the first try, they cleaned the offensive glass for the put backs.

Rudyard broke out to a 12-0 lead in the game?s first four minutes before Huron coach Tom Adrian had seen enough and called a timeout. His team responded by scoring on a Pat Quaine drive off Justin Idalski?s pass, but Rudyard led 29-7 after the first quarter. The Hurons played better in the second quarter, but couldn?t make up much ground. They trailed 46-23 at halftime.

SENIOR CENTER Devon Ferris gave Huron fans reason to cheer in the third quarter as he caught fire for 10 points, mostly on inside bankers and turnaround jumpers. But a 7-0 run midway through the frame stretched the Rudyard lead to 56-27 with most of their shots hitting from inside the paint.

Ferris led the team in scoring with 18 points while Idalski had nine and Quaine added six.

Rogers City connected on 15-of-20 free throws. ?It was hard to overcome our turnovers,? Adrian said. Last Friday the Hurons lost a tough 58-48 contest at Sault Ste. Marie. The Soo led 15-14 after the first quarter and 29-26 at halftime. Kevin Fairbanks scored 10 points to lead the scoring attack, Erik Meharg added nine and Idalski scored eight.

The difference came at the free throw line where the Hurons made just 3-of-8 while the

Soo hit on 13-of-18 attempts.

IN THE JV games, the Hurons suffered losses at Sault Ste. Marie and at home to Rudyard. At the Soo, the Hurons trailed 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and 26-24 at halftime. Rogers City lost 52-40. Chris Waibel scored 14 points while Jesse Wilbert added 10.

A big 27-point third quarter propelled Rudyard to a 77-47 win. In the second quarter, the Bulldogs erased a 19-14 first quarter Huron lead and took a 34-18 lead in to the locker room.

Wilbert scored 14 points, with seven coming in the first quarter. Jordan Bellmore added 10 and Waibel scored eight.

The Hurons play in Cheboygan tonight (Thursday) and are at home against Onaway next Wednesday. J.V. contest to begin at 6 p.m.
