Share of the league within Posen?s grasp tonight

?It is easy to see why Cedarville is the number one team in the state,? said Posen girls? head coach Karl Momrik, following Tuesday?s 82-31 loss at home. It ends the Vikings? 10 game winning streak.

All the coach can hope for now is the girls have really short memories, as they are back on the hardwood tonight in Twining with a chance to win a share of the North Star League (NSL) against Arenac Eastern.

Posen knocked them off the first time around in December, but Momrik says Arenac is tough place to win at.

?We are a very good team,? said Momrik of his squad, which hadn?t lost in seven weeks. ?We are in good shape in the NSL, and I told the girls after the game was over that we?ve got one important game this week and that is Thursday at Arenac Eastern. We win that and were are guaranteed a share of the conference.?

MOMRIK SAID the last time they played Cedarville the girls had to play a key conference game in their next contest and won. ?It helped us last time,? he said.

The Vikings (12-2, 10-0) have three remaining games against league competition. The remaining opponents are Hillman, Atlanta and Hale. Arenac is 8-2 in the league. In the Cedarville game, Posen made 35 turnovers against the Trojan defense.

?They made a statement why they are number one,? said Momrik. ?We hadn?t lost a game in seven weeks going into tonight. I don?t know what their shooting percentage had to be for the game, but they must have shot 65 percent.

?It was just an incredible performance by an incredible team. They just come firing on all cylinders, and as a program, we want to be there someday. We?re not there right now.? Posen brought a 15th ranking into the contest.

The score after one quarter was 23-8, but Cedarville skunked the Vikings in the second, keeping them off the scoreboard with their press.

?THEY DON?T just press, they have a press package, where they have three different presses that they throw at you,? said Momrik. ?Just when you think you are getting pretty good at one of them, they throw one of the other ones at you.?

The Vikes kept it close in the third, 15-12, but had a trouble scoring in the fourth as well. The Trojans went on a 14-0 run. Leanne Buczkowski scored the only field goal of the fourth quarter with 47.3 seconds le

Jessie Duncan was the leading scorer with 28 points, while Billie McLeod had 24. Janice Ciarkowski was the only Viking in double figures with 10, six of which were scored in the fourth quarter.

Last Thursday, Posen defeated Fairview 47-45 in contest the girls led by as many as 19. ?The outcome was never in doubt,? said Momrik. ?We were up by eight with 30 seconds and up by six with 12 seconds left. They made a couple of late threes.?

Ciarkowski had 14, while Nicole Purol added 10. THE POSEN J.V. (10-4, 9-1) lost to Cedarville 52-33. Judy Romel topped the scoring sheet with 13.

Last Thursday, LeAnn Strzelecki was the leading scorer in a 51-26 victory against Fairview. Tracy Mulka had 11.
