Up powerhouse Cedarville rolls to 98-64 win over RC

The Rogers City Hurons boys? basketball team hosted the Cedarville Trojans Tuesday evening and fell 98-64 to the number two ranked team in the state.

Rogers City would score first in the game as Devin Ferris hit for two points at the 7:38 mark. Cedarville would answer on their next trip down the floor to knot the game at two before Erik Meharg hit for three at the 7:02 mark. Rogers City would lead the game until with six minutes to go in the first quarter before Cedarville steadily built on their lead. The Hurons would keep the game close in the first quarter with a Kevin Fairbanks two right at the buzzer to make the score 22-15 in favor of Cedarville.

Cedarville would build on their lead to start the second quarter as Rogers City would not score until Meharg hit from downtown at the 6:52 mark to make the score 27-18. Tim Bober would add two at the 3:35 mark but the Hurons would score just three more baskets in the half to make the score 46-29 at the half.

The third quarter would begin with Cedarville scoring four quick points before Rogers City would score on a Fairbanks free throw at the seven-minute mark. The Hurons would continue battling for looks but Cedarville would again outscore the home team making the score 77-46 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter would go back and forth much of the way with Rogers City hanging in there and continuing to make shots but Cedarville proved too much as they answered every basket made by the Hurons.

?This team (Cedarville) is ranked number two in the state and I would like to know who is better. We came out and played hard but were unable to overcome their long outside shots. There is no defense when a team can come out and fire up shots from 40-feet away and sink them. We have the Sault up next and we match up very well with them,? said coach Tom Adrian.

The Hurons were led by Meharg who

had 20 including four three-pointers, Justin Idalski finished the game with 16 points for the Hurons with 10 of those coming in the second half. Fairbanks would finish with 12 points. Cedarville was led by Andrew Jaroche with 25.

LAST THURSDAY the Hurons traveled to St. Ignace and fell to the Saints by a score of 65-53. Ferris led the scoring attack for the Hurons with 17 followed by Meharg with 11 and Idalski with 10.

The junior varsity team fell to Cedarville 70-68. Chris Waibel led the way for the young Hurons with 16 points followed closely by Devin Hilla with 15 and Joe Kasubowski with 13.

Against St. Ignace the J.V. won 51-29 and had three players scoring 10 points apiece in Waibel, Kasubowski and Jordan Bellmore. The Hurons play at Sault Ste. Marie Friday and host Rudyard Tuesday with the junior varsity tip off at 6 p.m.
