Vikings win NSL championship

The Posen Vikings girls? basketball team traveled to Atlanta Monday to take on the Huskies and returned with a 60-35 victory. ?We got off to a good start and we never looked back. It was a good chance to get all of the players good playing time,? said coach Karl Momrik.

The Vikings held the Huskies to just one point in the first quarter as they took a commanding 17-1 lead at the end of the first frame. The second quarter would be more of the same as the Vikings outscored the Huskies 16-8 to take a 33-9 halftime lead.

?We pressured Atlanta into numerous mistakes and played great defense like we have all year,? said coach Momrik. Sophomore Lindsay Ponik led the Vikings scoring 18 points followed by a pair of seniors in Tina Mulka who netted 11 and Victoria Wozniak who added nine.

LAST THURSDAY at home the Vikings were able to clinch the North Star League (NSL) title with a 63-38 win over the Hale Eagles. The Vikings would again play with a lead for the entire game as they took a 18-7 lead to end the first quarte

Using their pressure defense the Vikings kept the Eagles off balance and caused them to make many mistakes and took a 36-17 lead into the locker room at halftime. Senior center Nicole Purol had a career high night with her 21 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Vikings to clinching the league title.

Junior Janice Ciarkowski would also have a double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

IN JUNIOR VARSITY action the Vikings defeated Atlanta 38-18 Monday night led by Emily Delekta with 12 points. Judy Romel and LeAnn Strzelecki would both score seven in the Viking win.

The J.V. also defeated Hale at home last Thursday 32-26 led by Delekta with 11 points. The J.V. is now 14-4 overall and 12-1 in the NSL. Next up for the Vikings is a home game tonight against Hillman and a home game next Thursday against Wolverine before they prepare for the district tournament.
