Hurons capture regional championship trophies

The Huron bowling teams traveled to regionals over the weekend in Traverse City and both teams came home with regional championship trophies and will move on to compete at the state tournament Friday in Jackson.

Each team at the regional tournament rolled six baker games followed by three regular games and Rogers City came out on top for both the girls and the boys. The boys? team rolled a total of 3,792, Iron Mountain finished second with 3,637 and Menominee took third with 3,457.

?Both teams bowled great, we peaked at the right time. On the boys side it was a lot easier than last year, rather than the one pin victory we cruised, leading from start to finish. The boys bowled 198 in the first baker game and that was the high game and led from that point. There really wasn?t anyone that stood out, everyone bowled well, we had six people that bowled (Alec Gajewski, Devon Ferris, Lucas Bellmore, Tony Bannasch, Robert Dietlin and Travis Smolinski) and they all had a good game and a so-so game. It was just a good team victory for us,? said coach Brian Bannasch.

Rogers City would win on the

girls? side with a total of 3,132. Conference foe St. Ignace would place second with 3,036 while Mason County Eastern took third with 2,989.

?The girls were basically the same. They were a little bit behind after the baker games but after the first regular game took the lead and maintained the lead and really it was already decided before the last game was bowled. It was a good victory. It just goes to show the type of program that we have here, to go in year after year and still be able to win, with three new girls and two boys with no experience to go in and win the region again,? said coach Bannasch.

Both teams will now compete in the state finals at Airport Lanes in Jackson on Friday. The teams will bowl eight baker games and two regular games in the qualifying round. The top eight scores based on total pins will advance to the match game round consisting of one regular game and four baker games.
