2009 Miss Sunrise Side Scholarship program this Saturday

The 2009 Miss Sunrise Side Scholarship program show is this Saturday in the Alcona High School Community Auditorium beginning at 4 p.m.

Hailey Renee Kimball, the 17-year-old daughter of Jackie and Rocky Kimball of Millersburg, is the only Presque Isle County resident competing in this year?s pageant. Kimball is a senior at Onaway High School where she will graduate as the valedictorian of her class in June before moving on to Saginaw Valley State University to study prelaw.

Kimball was Miss Onaway 2008 and first runner-up in the Miss Presque Isle County Fair pageant in 2007. She was a summer recreation assistant in Millersburg and has been a member of the NorthEast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC) and service learning council for three years.

Kimball served as class president her junior and senior years and as vice-president during her freshman and sophomore years. She participated in four years of basketball, track and volleyball and three years of softball for the Cardinals. Kimball was a member of the OHS band as a freshman, has been a member of the Ski Club for four years and served on student council all four years. She is a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and the Orange Team. Kimball was on the homecoming court as a freshman and as a senior and played two years of Amateur Athletic Union basketball.

This year the event is a combined show and the audience will have the opportunity to see the crowning of both Miss Sunrise Side and Miss Sunrise Side Outstanding Teen. Kimball will be competing against six other young women for the title of Miss Sunrise Side 2009. Other contestants are Vanessa Gail Oliver (Spruce), Heather Marie Lancewicz (Hubbard Lake), Kristen Lee Hansen (Lachine), Emily Elizabeth Kieliszewski (Alpena), Laura Elizabeth Pelton (Harrisville) and Kayla Lynn Manning (Hillman).

Miss Michigan 2008 Ashlee Baracy, who competed for the title of Miss

America in January, will be in attendance at the show, signing autographs and entertaining the crowd. Admission for the event is $14 at the door and tickets will be on sale beginning at 3 p.m.

This year’s contestants will be vying for the title of Miss Sunrise Side 2009, their share of $3,600 in cash scholarships, and a one-year $4,000 scholarship to Alpena Community College, sponsored by the Alpena Community College Foundation. They also are competing for the opportunity to represent the Sunrise Side at the 2010 Miss Michigan competition in Muskegon, competing for the title of Miss Michigan 2010.

These contestants are ages 17 through 23 and must live, work or attend school in the counties of Alcona, Alpena, Iosco, Montmorency, Presque Isle or Oscoda. This year’s lineup is made up of two former Miss Sunrise Side Teens and five young women who are new to the program.
