Grambau, Schuiteman earn honorable mention on Straits Area Conference girls’ basketball team

Two Huron basketball players earned honorable mention, all-conference for their efforts in the 2008-2009 season. Juniors Greta Grambau and Logan Schuiteman each made the Straits Area Conference (SAC) list.

?Greta and Logan were two outstanding players. Both of them were there for all 22 games and missed just one practice between them all season,? said Huron coach Paul Stempky.

Grambau, in her second year on the varsity, led the team in scoring with 7.1 points per game and led in steals with 45 on the season. She led all starters with 91 field goals on 267 attempts (.340).

Schuiteman averaged 6.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game with 26 steals and 19 assists. She connected on 52-of-185 from the field (.281). ?Greta played several positions for us this season from point guard, to shooting guard to forward. Greta works really hard. Logan was our second leading scorer and rebounder. I normally played her on the other team?s top offensive player. Logan had a lot of responsibilities, and played a lot of positions, too,? Stempky said.

The team had a 3-18 record, but ended on a high note as it won its last game of the season and the first game in the distr

ict tournament. ?We are looking forward to next year. With all the girls coming back and the ones coming up from the junior varsity, I think we are going to be really strong. We are going to be able to play a lot of people and I can see us doing really well next year,? said coach Paul Stempky.

Stempky said he looks for the team to improve on its shooting percentage (.292) and hopes to get the turnovers down from 29 per game, which hurt, he said. The team faced tough competition in St. Ignace, Cedarville, Sault Ste. Marie, Posen, Onaway and Cheboygan, all teams which had outstanding records this season.

The SAC first team consisted of co-MVPs senior Amanda Coveyou (14.1 ppg) and sophomore Nicole Elmblad (16.0 ppg) of St. Ignace, Sault Ste. Marie seniors Jordyn Pierce and Preston Brown, Rudyard junior Emily Jeffries, Cheboygan senior Courtney Hancock, and senior Colleen Hoy and junior Caryn Ducsay of Newberry.
