Hurons win home tournament

The Rogers City Huron baseball team won their home tournament over Sault Ste. Marie this Saturday despite being down by a score of 6-2. The Hurons were trailing the Blue Devils but battled back to tie the score at 6 in the fifth inning. A bases loaded walk to junior Matt Mertz would plate senior Jordan Zempel in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Hurons the 7-6 victory.

?It was great to come back from the 6-2 deficit to win the game. The Sault is a good team and we are really proud of the way the kids came back,? said coach Howard Madsen. Zempel took the win on the mound going all six innings. The Hurons advanced to the final game after defeating Posen 4-3. Rogers City scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the win. Posen scored one run in the third, fourth and seventh.

Tyler Szumila took the win on the mound for the Hurons going the distance giving up 7 hits, walking one and hitting one batter while striking out none. The game was a long game as a 90-min

ute rain delay halted action for a while. The Hurons had eight hits in the contest while Posen had 7.

LAST THURSDAY the Hurons hosted the Petoskey Northmen on a cold windy day at Gilpin Memorial Field. The Hurons would drop both games of the doubleheader 9-3 and 7-2. Ben Tulgestke took the loss in game one throwing 4 1/3 innings. Rogers City had six hits total. Junior third baseman Matt Mertz led the hitting attack with two hits. Game two was called after the fourth inning due to darkness. Kevin Fairbanks took the loss on the mound going 2 2/3 innings, he was relieved by Cody Elowsky and Alex Lemmon.

The Hurons scored both of their runs in the second inning when Josh Curtis singled and scored on a Fairbanks double. Tulgestke then singled to plate Fairbanks. Conference play began Wednesday (after press time) with a doubleheader in St. Ignace. The Hurons will be in action at the Alpena Invitational this weekend and will host Sault Ste. Marie next Tuesday beginning at 4:15 p.m.
