It?s official! Huber is the new superintendent

It took a few months, but finally everything was in place Monday for members of the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education to approve the hiring of Jamie Huber as their new superintendent.

The board approved a three-year contract of employment with Huber, who has been serving in the dual roles of superintendent/K-12 principal since November 2008. The effective dates are July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2012.

Details of the contract were finalized within the last month. Along with Huber?s duties as superintendent, he?ll also continue serving as secondary principal, the job he was originally hired to take over in the fall of 2007. His annual compensation will be $87,900.

?IT IS VERY humbling,? said Huber after the meeting. ?In spite of all that we?ve gone through here in the last year-and-a-half to two years, I still get up every morning looking forward to coming to work. It?s because of the people, it?s because of the community, and it?s because of the students.?

?It is his talents that has allowed him to step in and be our superintendent,? said president Mike Marx. Huber?s predecessor, Dan Byrne, resigned from office after facing felony charges and is currently serving time in the county jail. The board, at its meeting March 9, directed Marx to negotiate a contract with Huber for the position of superintendent/6-12 principal. Trustees had a chance to review the proposed contract, which is nearly identical to the language in the previous superintendent?s contract.

?THE CONTRACT itself, you probably recognize,? said Marx. ?Ninety-nine percent of the contract is the one we offered our previous superintendent in his first year.? The only difference

is the personal days Huber had as secondary principal. Marx said that ?has been raised to mirror what his present contract calls for.?

The board also waived the provision that the superintendent maintain residency with a 20-mile radius of the geographic boundaries of the district. Marx said consideration has to be given to Huber as he attempts to sell his home in Cheboygan. ?The goal always has been to get closer,? said Huber. ?I?ve been honest about that across the board. It is a matter of when it all comes together. It is great to be a buyer right now, but being a seller, it?s easier said than done.?

Huber?s wife Natasha has been teaching a kindergarten class at Rogers City Elementary School. Their daughter also attends the school. ?It is unfortunate that we had to make this decision at this time, but it was reassuring to have somebody who was able to step up to the plate and hit a home run for us. He?s proven himself to be a very, very capable administrator in this district. We are very fortunate to have him
