Three youth wrestlers to compete in MYWA state finals

Three youth wrestlers from Rogers City will be competing in the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association (MYWA) state finals this weekend at the Jenison Fieldhouse at Michigan State University.

Sixth-grader Jacob Sobeck, fifth-grader Quintin Kelly and eighth-grader Caleb Pommerenke have all qualified for the state finals after placing in the top four at the regional meet held on March 22 in Alma.

The young wrestlers will begin competing at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4 and wrestling w

ill continue that evening until only eight wrestlers remain in each bracket. Competition will resume Sunday, April 5 at 11 a.m. following a parade of champions which begins at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sobeck will be competing at 85 pounds in the 97-98 age group. Sobeck placed first at regionals in Alma and will look to finish in high standing at the state finals. Sobeck will face Noah Hall of Niles Wrestling Club in round one.

Kelly competes at 90 pounds in the 97-98 age group and finished fourth at regionals a couple of weeks ago. Kelly will face Tyler Morland of Brighton Wrestling Club in round one.

Pommerenke will be making his second straight trip to the finals as he was there last season as well. Pommerenke wrestles at 170 pounds in the 94-96 age group and will face Zackary Rosenberger of Maple Valley in the first round.
