Vikings get some early games against Whittemore

This is no April Fool’s joke. The Posen softball is expected to play in its first doubleheader of the season at Whittemore-Prescott High School. The southern end of M-65 has far less snow than areas north of M-32, allowing the Vikes to see some live action in early April, which is usually unheard of.

Most teams from the area don’t see their first action outside until mid-April or beyond. W-P played their first home games on Monday. Posen has a ways to go before it will get its first game at home, with the weekend snow and maybe more in the next couple of days.

The Vikings lost in the district championship game the last time they were on a field. They took Onaway

into the bottom of the seventh inning of the title tilt before losing. All the talk about Posen here in the first month will be about their younger players, as 75 percent of the roster is made up of sophomores, freshmen and three eight-graders. The Vikes earned preseason notice from other coaches, mainly because the lone senior, Christina Bednarski, the two juniors and three sophomores are really good. Posen is ranked ninth in the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. The freshmen and eighth graders are still unproven, but three from the newest additions will need to fill three starting positions.

Bednarski is a returning all-stater in center field, while sophomore ace, Leanne Buczkowski won 15 games in 2008. She?ll start on the mound if weather doesn?t cancel the doubleheader. The first home doubleheader is April 16 against Alanson. Look for more details in next week’s spring sports preview.
