Volleyball court to be added to Trout River Park

Due to a curious effort by department of public works superintendent Roger Wenzel a volleyball court is going to be added to the Trout River Park. Wenzel was clearing the Huron Sunrise Trail of snow and getting it ready to be swept when he noticed a number of people were utilizing the park and had been, being curious at how to keep his customers, citizens, happy he stopped and asked them if they felt that there was anything that could be added to the park to make it an even better destination.

At Wednesday afternoons parks and recreation commission meeting Wenzel brought the suggestions of the citizens to the board. ?They have suggested at least one more grill and also asked if a volleyball court could be constructed there,? said Wenzel. Wenzel and his crew will be installing another grill out at the park and with the OK of the commission given Wednesday they will also be removing two of the volleyball poles from Lakeside Park that cannot be used due to a safety issue and moving them to the Trout River Park along with putting sand in place to make it safe for users.

The volleyball court will be located on the opposite side of the trail from the fire pit to avoid any possible safety issues and will make the park far more than it is now. Going along with Wenzel?s curious effort to improve one city park the commission discussed the possibility of sending out a survey to Rogers City residents to ask them their opinion of the park system and what they would like to see done to improve them. The committee looked at a sample of a survey and will be editing and making it pertain to Rogers City.

A subcommittee is going to be looking at the survey next week and they are hopeful that they will have the survey?s ready to be mailed with the next water bills to all city water customers. However, some members of the commission were concerned with the amount of people who might be overlooked that aren?t on the city water system but still utilize the parks. In an effort to gather the best information possible from the people who use the parks the city will also be putting the survey on the Web site www.rogerscity.com for those familiar with the park system in Rogers City to make comment as well.

Last year the parks and recreation commission organized a Parks Day that had people

visiting a number of parks in Rogers City and collecting cards for a poker run and prizes. The event was done in conjunction with the Fall Fest sponsored by the Rogers City Area Chamber of Commerce.

The commission spoke about Parks Day and planning an event for this year but had many questions on what the right way to go would be. Fall Fest isn?t until September and the weather is usually not the warmest. The commission discussed maybe moving their day to a time when the weather is warmer. Another concern was doing it in conjunction with another event takes some of the fun and enjoyment out of the day.

After discussing their concerns about Park Day a subcommittee was formed to discuss the possibilities in more detail and then bring a recommendation back to the entire commission at a later date. The parks and recreation commission is working hard to promote not only Rogers City but its many parks and recreational opportunities for locals and visitors.
