Wozniak, Purol to lead class of 2009

Victoria Wozniak and Nicole Purol have been named the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Posen High School (PHS) class of 2009 in commencement ceremonies set for June 5.

Wozniak (3.95) is the daughter of Ken and Ginny Wozniak. She has been a member of the basketball, volleyball and track teams for the Vikings. Wozniak is also a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D) and Educational Talent Search (ETS). She was named to the academic all-conference teams in basketball and volleyball.

After graduation in June, Wozniak plans to attend Oakland University to pursue a degree in physical therapy.

Purol (3.94) is the daughter of James and Marie Purol. She is the trip club treasurer, the vice president of the pep club, student council treasurer and is a member of the NHS, S.A.D.D., ETS, Orange Team and is a class officer. Purol has also participated in volleyball, basketball and track for the Vikings. She was named academic all-conference for volleyball and basketball. Purol was designated North Star League (NSL) most valuable player (MVP) in volleyball. Purol was also named sprinter of the year and MVP for the track team, was given the 6th man and defensive player awards for basketball, and the serving award for volleyball.

Purol plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University in the fall before transferring to a dental school. Aaron Romel (3.93) is the son of Marti Romel and Kevin Romel. He is a member of ETS and has been a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams for the Vikings. Romel was the 2006 rookie of the year for baseball and was most improved in football. In 2007 he was NSL all-conference second team in football and honorable mention in baseball. He was also all-district first team as an infielder in 2007. In 2008 he was academic all-district and all-conference in baseball as well as outfield of the year. Romel was NSL all-conference in 2008 in football. Romel plans to attend Alma College in the fall where he will play football and baseball while studying either physics or chemistry. Brandon Beach (3.88) is the son of Curtis and Toni Beach. He is a member of S.A.D.D., ETS, the pep club and the trip club. Beach has competed for the Vikings in football, basketball and baseball. He has received the perfect attendance award and has been an honor student.

After graduation Beach plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University, but is undecided on what he will study. Bonnie Schmitz (3.86) is the daughter of Jeff and Kate Bruski. She is a member of the trip club, the pep club, the ski cub, student council, Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NMYAC), NHS, S.A.D.D. and the Orange Team. Schmitz participated in volleyball and track for the Vikings. Schmitz was Miss Posen 2008 and she won the poise and appearance award in the pageant. She was also the recipient of the volleyball spirit award.

Schmitz is undecided on where she will attend college but hopes to get a degree in architecture and design. Tina Mulka (3.78) is the daughter of Mitchell and Angela Mulka. She is her class president and is a member of the pep club, the trip club, S.A.D.D., ETS, Upward Bound, NHS and Orange Team. Mulka has competed in volleyball, basketball and track for the Vikings. She was named academic all-conference in volleyball and basketball and was NSL all-conference first team in volleyball. Last year she was named Posen?s female athlete of the year.

Mulka will pursue a degree in elementary education after graduating from Posen High School. She will be attending Alpena Community College before transferring to a four year university. Christina Bednarski (3.69) is the daughter of Michael and Donna Bednarski. She is a member of the pep club, S.A.D.D., the trip club, ETS, ski club, NHS and is in journalism. She has participated in basketball, softball, volleyball and football for the Vikings as well as played softball for the Presque Isle Panthers. Bednarski was named to the all-region team for softball in 2007 as well as being all-district, all-conference first team, all-state honorable mention. She was also named first team all-state in 2008 after being named the North Star League MVP on the softball field.

Bednarski plans to study nursing at Alpena Community College in the fall. Emily Smolinski (3.58) is the daughter of Richard and Connie Smolinski. She is a member of S.A.D.D., ETS, trip club, Orange Team, is a class officer and president of the student council. Smolinski participated in basketball, volleyball and softball for the Vikings. She has been named to the academic all-state teams and is on the honor roll.

After graduating from PHS in June, Smolinski plans to attend Alpena Community College before transferring to either Michigan State University or Ferris State University. Sam Altman (3.36) is the daughter of Dave and Lynn Altman. She is a member of the trip club, the pep club, S.A.D.D., Upward Bound and ETS. Altman has also participated in cheerleading where she was named the most improved. After graduation, Altman plans to finish cosmetology school.

Tyler Krajniak (3.24) is the son of Gordy and Connie Krajniak. He is a member of the student council, pep club, trip club, S.A.D.D., ski club, ETS, and yearbook staff. Krajniak has participated in football, basketball and track for the Vikings.

He has earned the advanced computer science award, was the captain of the basketball team for two years, was named first-team NSL all conference in football twice, was on the Alpena News all area first-team as a defensive bac

k, and has been awarded the Michigan Promise Scholarship, as well as a scholarship to Grand Valley State University. Krajniak was also the captain of the football team as a senior. Krajniak plans to attend Grand Valley State University to study business accounting following his graduation from PHS this June. Tyson Klecha (3.22) is the son of Kevin and Phyllis Klecha. He is a member of the ski club and S.A.D.D. Klecha has participated in football, basketball and baseball for the Vikings. He has been awarded as the most valuable outfielder, most valuable pitcher and was first-team NSL all-conference in baseball.

After graduating from PHS in June, Klecha plans to attend Calvin College. Autumn Reece (3.01) is the daughter of Stacey, Lorie and Stanley Reece. She is a member of the trip club, the pep club, Orange Team and S.A.D.D. Reece has been on the PHS honor roll and has participated in volleyball for the Vikings. Reece plans to major in nursing but is undecided on where she will go to college in the fall.
