Hurons go 6-0 on the week to improve to 22-8 on the season

The Rogers City softball team had yet another undefeated week as they swept doubleheaders from the Newberry Indians and the Posen Vikings and earned their third tournament championship. Tuesday the Hurons hosted Newberry and won game one 11-0 and the nightcap 8-5. Sammi Brege earned the win in game one going four innings. She surrendered just two hits and had four strikeouts. Katie Darga pitched the fifth inning and struck out the side in relief.

The Huron bats were alive and well as they pounded 13 hits. Logan Schuiteman, Sara Carpenter, Katie Tulgestke, Greta Grambau, Sam Hall and Amanda Lenard each had two hits in the victory while Sammi Brege added the final hit. Lenard had a double, triple and two RBI, Hall had a double with three RBI, Tulgestke had a double and Schuiteman led off the game with a triple.

Schuiteman earned the win on the mound in game two as she went the distance giving up just three hits while striking out nine Indians. Rogers City would muster only six hits in the nightcap including two from Sammi Brege and hits from Tulgestke, Schuiteman, Grambau and Lenard.

The Hurons won the Glen Lake tournament on Saturday as they defeated Clare 10-4 and Pine River 3-2 to take the championship Sammi Brege earned the win against Clare as she gave up four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. The Hurons pounded nine hits in the win. Emily Marx had two hits including a triple and three RBI. Other hits came from Schuiteman, Tulgestke, Grambau, Hall, Lenard, Sammi Brege and Darga.

Schuiteman earned the win in the championship game over Pine River scattering four hits while striking out four. She also had two hits for the Hurons who mustered six hits in the win. Other hits came from Carpenter, Tulgestke, Marx and Grambau. Rogers City scored all three runs in the third inning after Darga drew a walk, moved to second on a Schuiteman single and scored on a base hit by Carpenter. Tulgestke then hit a sacrifice fly to score Schuiteman before Emily Marx singled in Carpenter.

?Both Logan and Sammi threw very well and our team defense was great. Katie Darga made several outstanding plays in center field. Pine River was 20-4 coming into the game and that was a nice win for us. The tournament MVP award went to the entire Rogers City team as everyone contributes for a team to have success and this group of kids works very hard and pick one another up all of the time,? said coach Karl Grambau. LAST THURSDAY in Posen the Hurons swept the Vikings 12-4 and 12-7. Sammi Brege earned the win in game one giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out four. Rogers City scored 12 runs on 11 hits led by Tulgestke with two hits including a double and three RBI. Carpenter and Grambau each had two hits and two RBI. Lenard and Sammi Brege each had two hits and Marx added a hit.

Schuiteman earned the game-two win giving up seven runs on 12 hits while striking out one. Rogers City had two runners on with two outs in the second inning when they erupted for 11 runs. The Hurons gathered 12 hits in the victory led by Sammi Br

ege with three hits including two doubles, a triple and two RBI. Schuiteman had two hits and two RBI while Tulgestke and Hall each had two hits. Marx and Grambau each had a hit and two RBI and Darga added a hit and an RBI.

?The ball bounced our way and we got the sweep over Posen. Our pitchers did a nice job and we had some timely hits and nice defensive plays to help get the victories. Posen is a very good team and these were nice wins for us. We will continue to work on the little things to make us better in practice and have a chance to win the conference championship on Thursday,? said coach Grambau.

The Hurons will make up a conference doubleheader against the Rudyard Bulldogs Thursday in Rudyard and will face Onaway in district action on May 30 in Hillman.
