Fourth of July weekend celebration hits Onaway

The Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce has been diligently planning the Fourth of July celebration that has come to be known as the Greatest Fourth in the North.

Some events have already gone by, with the co-ed softball tournament held at Edna Lound Recreation Area last weekend, the Miss Onaway pageant and the Street Dance on June 27.

Today (Friday) the carnival rides by Schmidt Amusements will be open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and will officially kick off the festive holiday weekend.

Saturday, Independence Day, the carnival rides will again be open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Arts and crafts on the historic Courthouse lawn from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. will draw many as well as a used book sale in the lobby of the courthouse sponsored by the Onaway Friends of the Library.

At 11:30 a.m. will be the kiddie parade, which begins at the historic courthouse. Grand marshals Ruth and Ray Szymoniak will lead ?The 80s? grand parade beginning at 12:30 p.m. which also will feature the Onaway High School marching band, many floats, horse clubs, fire departments, local pageant winners and more. Following the parade on the corner of Elm and State streets will be the annual Fireman?s water battle.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will be holding a chicken barbecue from 10 a.m. until sold out and the United Methodist Church will hold an ice cream social from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. St. Paul Catholic Church also will be hosting a large salad bar luncheon from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

umni tent will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

At Onaway Speedworld on M-33 time trials will begin at 4 p.m. followed by a full racing show at 5:30 p.m.

The day?s events will wrap up with a fireworks display beginning at dusk. Fireworks will be shot off from Horrock?s field near the airport and the alternate date in case of rain will be July 5.

ON JULY 5 from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. will be the Onaway Auto and Bike Show held at the Onaway school.

Also on July 4 and 5 will be the Dancing Hippopotamus arts and crafts show held at Bearinger Township Hall from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

According to chamber executive director Beverly Brougham, the street dance held on June 27 was a success. ?It wasn?t as well-attended as we had hoped it would be but everyone who was there had a great time. We hope to do it again next year on the Fourth of July weekend,? said Brougham.
