Major girls first to play as Little League tournament begins

A last-inning rally gave the Cheboygan major girls all-stars a 5-4 win over Rogers City in the first game of the double-elimination round in Cheboygan. Rogers City trailed 3-2 heading into their last at bat in the top of the sixth. With two, out the team rallied. Ashley Meyers drilled a liner too hot for the leaping second baseman to handle, landing Meyers on first base.

Then Cassy Brege hit a rocket off the pitcher?s glove putting runners on first and second for Sarah Meredith. With a 1-2 count on her, and Rogers City down to its last strike, manager Dennis Meredith sent both runners, Meyers to third and Brege to second. The Cheboygan catcher?s throw got by the third baseman, allowing Meyers to score and Brege to advance to third. Then Meredith drilled an RBI single to give RC a 4-3 lead.

The Rogers City lead unraveled in the bottom of the inning. After Meyers struck out the leadoff hitter, the light rain, which plagued the earlier innings, turned stronger, making the ball difficult to handle. After a single, Meyers walked the next two batters and a pair of errors led to two runs for Cheboygan.

Meyers pitched all six innings, allowing four hits and five walks while striking out 12 batters. Rogers City scored two runs in the first on one hit. After leadoff batter Logan Fleming was hit by a pitch, Meyers drilled a two-out inside-the-park homer to give the visitors a quick 2-0 lead.

Cheboygan scored one in the bottom of the first and another in the fourth to tie the game a 2-2. Cheboygan took the lead in the fifth, taking advantage of a walk and an error to score the lead run. Rogers City was set to play Wednesday the loser of the Cheboygan vs. Onaway game from Tuesday night. There are three teams in the district tournament fighting for the right to play in the state finals in Lexington.
