Posen grad to try and compete in two sports at Alma

Recent Posen High School (PHS) graduate Aaron Romel is going to try and do something that not a lot of athletes coming out of high school would attempt. Some struggle to do well in one sport. He is going to compete as a dual sport athlete at Alma College.

Romel plans to major in physics or chemistry, but play football and baseball as well. Football looks much more promising as the Scots’ coaches have sent him letters expressing their interest in having him play. Baseball will be another story, as he?ll have to show off the skills displayed while playing four years as a starter for PHS. Brandon Hentkowski already is a Scots’ pitcher and will be giving some pointers as to what the Alma coach is looking for out of a player.

Romel will be heading to Alma with an outstanding grade point average of 3.93 class. He is the third ranking student from the graduating class of 2009. His outstanding grades earned him an impressive academic award of about $14,000. Romel was a hard-nosed linebacker for the Vikings last fall. He was always around the ball and couldn?t be kept off the gridiron. Even when a broken bone threatened to sideline the senior and ended his season, he had it wrapped and kept playing.

He definitely was a defensive force and hopes to duplicate that at the collegiate level. Romel believes he is up for the rigors of college sports and will try to prove himself on the practice field and let the coaches ?put me where they want me to be.? That could even be at wide receiver since Alma runs the spread offense and graduated seven wide outs.

He is more than likely a candidate for the junior varsity team. The Scots were around the .500 mark, but have been in the middle of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). In 2004, 17-year coach Jim Cole, guided the Scots to the MIAA title and a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III national playoffs. It is difficult to recall the last time a Posen player has been recruited to play football.

The new Nautical Festival Committee sure is earning high grades in the area of promotion — at least in my book. There have been times where there has been some friction/competition between what is going on at the big tent and at the softball fields. We have entered a new era folks. According to longtime softball tournament organizer Karl Grambau, who is just starting to receive registrations, he has been told by the festival com

mittee that free passes for the tent will be given to each player in both the men’s and women’s tournaments for both Friday and Saturday.

Grambau said one manager was anxious to return his registration, so he wouldn’t miss out on the deal. “It will help the tournament and the festival,” said Grambau, who is the contact for both tournaments at 734-4021, along with Roger Wenzel at 734-4009. Grambau is anticipating more men?s teams this year, because of the dates of the festival weekend are a week later than in previous years. He still isn?t sure about the women?s tournament.

One never knows when a celebrity might appear, as Boston Bruin goalie, Tim Thomas, a face of a National Hockey League franchise, played in last year?s tournament. He has family that lvies near Millersburg. No word yet on if he will be back.
