Schedule begins as Little League playoffs start

The Little League district playoffs begin this week with opening games for the five all-star teams to take place over the next couple of weeks, including the first games at Little League Park in Rogers City. The districts feature a double-elimination format. The major girls? all-stars (11-12 year olds) will be the first to see action early next week in Cheboygan. There are three teams involved.

According to coach Dennis Meredith, the tournament begins Monday. As of Tuesday night, it was unclear when Rogers City?s first game would be. Playing on the home field in July will be the RC junior (13-14) girls. Action against Cheboygan gets underway July 13. It has been several years since all-star games have been played at the complex.

Liz Hincka, Joel Idalski and Ted Urban are coaching the girls. The RC senior boys (14-16) also get to play on the home diamond. A doubleheader is scheduled with Petoskey July 15, the only other team entered. A team that sweeps moves on, while a split would force an additional game the next day. Eric Brege coaches the local team. The RC minor (9-10) girls play in Cheboygan July 13. Todd Budnick and Rich Lenard will coach the team.

The RC major (11-12) boys will play in Petoskey, although dates have not been confirmed. Coaching the boys will be Cory Malocha and Jesse Szatkowski. Next week?s Presque Isle County Advance will begin publishing photographs of the all-star teams as well as results turned in by the coaches.
