Girls team takes second at first meet of the season

The Rogers City cross country teams were in their first action of the season Monday night in Inland Lakes. The girls run first this season and they came ready to run as they placed second behind Wolverine. Senior Greta Grambau led the way for the Hurons as she finished in second place with a time of 23:14. Sophomore Sierra Centala picked up where she left off a season ago as she took sixth at 25:24.

Freshman Mariah Lloyd was the next Huron girl to cross the line as she finished in 25:34 for 8th place. Junior Leilani Kortman placed 11th with a time of 26:14. Freshman Bailey Andrzejewski took 15th at 27:39 and junior Jami Horn was 21st at 30:53. ?I felt that the girls came out strong and ran well for being so early in the season,? said coach Rob Kortman.

SOPHOMORE JOEY Sobeck led the way for the boys? team as he finished in fifth place at 20:06. Freshman Paul Wilbert wasn?t far behind finishing sixth at 20:16. Sophomore Vinny Szczerowski took 18th place at 22:33 in his first career cross country race. Fellow sophomore Vincent Kuznicki took 33rd place at 28:03.

?The boys didn?t place as a team due to not having a full team with summer vacation. I only had four boys running. The boys that ran show that we will be a strong team when we are in full force,? said coach Kortman.

In the middle school race Colton Fessler took first place for the boys with a time of 9:40. Amber Nowicki was second for the girls at 11:04. Samantha Bober was fifth at 12:05, Brooke Dubie was 9th at 12:26, Alysse Hemple was 10th at 13:11, Kaitlyn Bruning was 12th at 13:24, Amber Pilarski 13th at 13:27, Torri Delekta 14th at 14:32, Ryley Schalk 16th at 14:48 and Kayla Schwiesow 17th at 14:56. The Hurons next will be next Thursday in Ogemaw Heights.
