Newest inductees honored at annual Lake Lore celebration

The 19th Annual Lake Lore Celebration, conducted by the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum, saw the dedication of 29 new members last Saturday in a steamy Knights of Columbus Hall. Of the inductees were seven men who lost their lives on the Bradley, Cedarville and Edmund Fitzgerald. Other sailors inducted made their lives and living on the lakes during their careers.

Shelley Pinkleman, 54, of Frederic, lost her father Edward Jungman on the Cedarville in 1965. She continuously wiped away tears during the nearly hour-long ceremony. ?Christmas time was when I missed him the most, because he always came home around the holidays,? said Pinkleman. ?My sister, my brother and myself all waited for him and then he spent the winter with us. It was a treasured time.

Pinkleman didn?t know she would be asked to come forward to receive a certificate on behalf of her father, but after more than four decades, ?I think it gave me closure.? MORE THAN 200 people attended the luncheon. The Lore induction ceremony was the apex of the two days of events Friday and Saturday. Vic Winkel, who was inducted this year with two family members, was honored as a co-founder of the gathering event and museum nearly 20 years ago.

A tour of Calcite quarry was conducted Friday afternoon, followed by Debbie Alyn Jett?s presentation of the history of the Life Saving Service, as well as the Great Lakes saga of Captain Jerome Kiah, a Lore inductee this year, and his crew at Pointe aux Barques in the Thumb. Jett also shared the story of Joseph Sawyer, former Life Saving Service District superintendent who lost his life off Rogers City in 1880 while returning from an inspection. Joseph Valentin was the sole survivor and will have a plaque placed at his grave in Rogers City.
