Wettest August 15 since 1989

Recent warm temperatures have also brought a lot of heavy rains to the area. According to meteorologist Jeff Halblaub with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord Onaway received 3.74 inches of rain.

Halblaub said that between Onaway and Cheboygan most areas received between 2 and 4 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, although some residents recorded between 5 and 6 inches of rain in their rain gauges.

While no long term records have been kept for Presque Isle County

, a partner with the service reported that Saturday was the wettest August 15 on record from the observation station four miles north of Onaway as the previous mark was 1.44 inches of rain in 1989.

The NWS did notice that what happened in the area Friday night and Saturday morning is out of the realm of what is typical as the rains that fell were the leftovers of thunderstorms that had passed through and were still moving through the area. ?It was at the extreme side of things. Two inches and up in a 24-hour period is a significant amount of rainfall. Usually 1 inch is a good rainstorm,? said Halblaub.

According to Halblaub a cold front iwas moving through the area and bringing cooler, drier and more comfortable air with it. However, a potent low pressure system was expected to move through the area Thursday and had the potential to bring some more powerful rains. As we know in northern Michigan we typically see one day of an Indian summer each year, a 70 degree Fahrenheit day following the first freeze of the area, but Halblaub said that potential may be even greater this year with the long, cold spring weather experienced throughout northern Michigan.
