Tigers swept by Hurons in home volleyball action

The Hurons made quick work of the visiting Alcona Tigers, taking all three games by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-20 in volleyball action in Rogers City Tuesday. Rogers City dominated game one, as Alcona?s offense fell victims to unforced errors while the Hurons ran up a 12-1 lead The only Tiger point came off a bad serve. Alcona cut the lead to 20-10 before a Tiger serve went long to give the serve back to the Hurons. Then two Tigers? errors, sandwiched around an ace from Rachel Lewandowski, made the score 24-10. Alcona had a pair of tip-winners, and then scored on a missed kill try, to move to 24-13. Logan Schuiteman put the game away with a kill down the left sideline for the win.

IN GAME two, the Huron lost the first point then roared out to a 10-2 lead. Point 10 was a Schuiteman kill off a set by Leann Knopf. Two aces by Taylor Darling helped the rally. Alcona rallied for the next four points before Knopf ended the rally with a kill. Amanda Smolinski had two kills and then Schuiteman drilled a kill for a 14-6 lead. The Tigers cut the lead to 22-13 before RC came back with the next three to win. A slow start for the Hurons found Alcona leading 7-4. A fault on the serve and two misplayed returns knotted the score at 7-7. Schuiteman?s tip gave the Hurons their first lead of the game at 10-9.

That lead didn?t last long as Alcona led 13-11 before another run by the Hurons made the score 15-13. A block by middle-hitter Becca Peacock closed out the run. Schuiteman?s ace serve, off the net, closed out the game in a 25-20 Huron win. ?There was some excitement about playing at home tonight and trying to pull off a win. We didn?t really have a great record last year so I have been telling them we need some wins,? said coach Kristy Smolinski after the game.

A BETTER THAN average crowd witnessed an improved Huron squad eager to please the home fans. ?They play really well together and as a team they click really well. We have had a few challenges so far. Tiffany Schaedig is out with an injury. Katie Tulgestke is just coming back from an injury. We need to take it slow with her because we want to keep her the rest of the season,? Smolinski said. Schuiteman and Shelby Schleben each had three kills while Smolinski added two. Schleben

had four aces while Darling, Smolinski, and Tulgestke each had three. Darling and Schleben each added three digs. Smolinski had 30 sets while Tulgestke had 19 and Lewandowski added 11. Coach Smolinski said she is pleased with the play of the team in the early going of the season. She said the team is working to improve its passing, showing signs of improvement each game.

Having to transition from a two-setter offense to a one-setter in Tulgestke?s absence has been a challenge, the coach said. ?We had to work some different players into different positions, and they are struggling with that a bit,? she said.

THE JUNIOR VARSITY took three games from Alcona Tuesday, 25-19, 25-5 and 15-10. Emily Barrow had 10 ace serves, Ashley Adams had seven while Linnea Brege and Shayla Atkins added six each. The JV played at the Inland Lakes tournament last week and didn?t advance to bracket play. Scores were 25-13, 25-15 with Harbor Light Christian; 20-25, 19-25 with Pellston; 23-25, 25-15 with East Jordan; and 23-25, 23-25 with Inland Lakes. The JV hosts its home tournament Saturday.
