Cardinal boys cross country team remains undefeated

The Onaway High School boys? cross country team, which has yet to lose to a Division IV opponent this season, won the 21-team Logger Invitational on Saturday at Boyne Falls. The Cardinals finished with 94 points (determined by the placement of a team?s top five finishers) to edge the meet?s host, which finished with 95 points, and Northern Trails Academy, which finished with 96.

Lain Veihl placed third among the 93 athletes in the boys race, finishing the five-kilometer trail in 17:47. Anthony Lane was eighth in 18:45, while Kyle Moreau was 20th in 19:42.

Though only two of their times counted in the scoring, the final four Cards finished together, as Collin Hoffmeyer was 31st (20:15), Newt Chapman was 32nd (20:18), Gus Robins was 33rd (20:19), and Josh Costa was 34th (20:23).

Though the girls? team did not place, Melissa Pomranke (34th), Emily Estep (42nd), Sam Freel (60th), Megan Estep (63rd), and Faith Chapman (66th) all turned in solid performances.

Two days earlier, the cross country squads competed in a 23-team meet at Mancelona, with the boys winning that meet with 52 points, ahead of Elk Rapids, which finished with 77, and Central Lake, which had 81.

Veihl was fourth among the 86 runners in that race, in 17:36. Lane was sixth (18:46), Costa was 11th (19:28), Moreau was 13th (19:29), Chapman was 18th (20:05), Hoffmeyer was 19th (20:07), and Robins was 27th (20:43).

Freel won the junior varsity girls race, with Faith Chapman taking second in that competition.

The cross country teams are back in action Wednesday at the Ski Valley Conference meet at Central Lake. The OHS boys will be gunning for a third straight SVC title in that one.
