Hurons take conference win at Newberry

The Rogers City varsity volleyball team traveled to Newberry for a Straits Area Conference match Tuesday evening and defeated the Indians in three straight games, 25-12, 26-24 and 25-22. Amanda Smolinski had five set assists, four kills, three digs and two aces. Becca Peacock notched five kills and one ace serve. Linnea Brege had six set assists while Shelby Schleben had four ace serves and two kills. Senior Logan Schuiteman notched four aces, five kills and one dig and LeAnn Knopf had five kills and four aces against the Indians.
?We started out okay and put the first game away fairly quickly before playing down the next two. But we took the win and we needed the boost for the weekend. They played together and kept a good attitude. This is our second conference win and plan on taking another one next week,? said coach Kristy Smolinski. LAST THURSDAY the Hurons hosted the Onaway Cardinals and dropped the first two games before winning the third. Onaway would go on to win game four and put the Hurons away.

The Hurons fell 21-25, 16-25 and 12-25 in that match at the Sault. The Hurons will travel to the Suttons Bay Invitational Saturday, will be at Rudyard Tuesday and will host their home tournament October 17.
