Eagles to send boxes to troops

The Millersburg Eagles have been busy collecting items at local stores and venues as they have packed 70 boxes full of items to send to servicemen and women.

The boxes contain many items including personal items, cards, games, greeting cards and many other items. As of now the Eagles have intend to sent them to Presque Isle County military personnel first before expanding to others, but they do not yet have 70 names and addresses, they are gathering those daily.

?Originally someone came in and said that they had read about a group of Eagles who was trying to do this nationwide, and they asked why couldn?t we do it locally? So we started working on it, and this is what happened,? said Barb Watson.

Although holiday season may seem to be the reason for doing the boxes, the Eagles are going to continue the program year round because they believe the troops need support not only at the hol

idays, but all the time.

?My husband and I worked at Tom?s Family Market for a couple of hours gathering items. We did very well that day. I think it?s wonderful we were able to do this. The people were really very generous, too,? said Shirley Sbonek who helped with the project.

Also helping with the project were the Junior Eagles, a group of boys and girls ages 5-12 in the county that formed a couple of months ago and adopted the motto, ?Kids helping Kids?. The junior Eagles want to help out the troops and spent time making handmade cards with personal messages as well as helping to pack boxes.

Each box is $12 to mail and cash donations have helped with that cost as well. The Eagles will continue gathering names and making boxes throughout the year.
