Senior Greta Grambau will be the lone Huron making the trip to the cross country state finals at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn Saturday after finishing fourteenth with a time of 22:29. ?I am very proud of Greta and all she has done this year. I believe that hard work pays off and Greta has worked hard all year,? said coach Rob Kortman. To qualify for the state meet a runner must finish in the top 15 or the team must place in the top three. The Rogers City girls placed seventh on the day in regionals at Ellsworth Friday.

?It was warm and overcast with a light rain falling. The rain from early in the day and from the week before had done damage to the course making it soft and very slippery. There was more mud at regionals then at the mud run. I felt that the runners gave me all they had and a little more, which took a lot,? said coach Kortman. Finishers for the girls were Bailey Andrzejewski 25th (24:19), Jami Horn 38th (25:52), Sierra Centala 45th (26:18) and Leilani Kortman 57th (27:32).

The Huron boys followed with a ninth-place finish. ?In the boys race, the course was worse due to the girls running first. For every step forward it was two back,? said coach Kortman. Sophomore Joey Sobeck led the boys? team with a 23rd place fin

ish in 20:25, right on his heels was freshman Paul Wilbert in 24th at 20:29. Other finishers for the boys were Vinny Szczerowski 59th (23:10), Andy Derry 64th (23:32) and Vincent Kuznicki 76th (25:56).

?All of the boys put forth a strong showing in a tough field of runners. The boys? team is young and will improve greatly in the next year,? said coach Kortman. The regional meet ended the cross country season for all but Grambau who will look to do well at the state meet. The Division Four girls race will be the first of the day beginning at 10 a.m. A top 30 finish would give all-state honors to Grambau.

?I only had two seniors leaving us, one from each team. I wish Andy Derry and Greta Grambau the best of luck in the rest of their high school careers. I am already looking forward to next cross country season. I believe that we have a good core coming back and with this year?s eighth-graders added to the mix and hopefully some new runners, I think we should be stronger,? said coach Kortman.
