Sportsman?s show scheduled for Nov. 28-29

Presque Isle County?s Onaway Sportsman?s Show is scheduled for Nov. 28 and 29 at the Onaway High School. Vendors with products and displays will be on hand Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

In addition, daily door prizes and kid?s door prizes will be given away each day and food will be served. A kid?s fish pond run by the Hammond Bay Area Anglers with fish donated by local businesses will be up and running. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be on hand with a hunter safety simulator with hunter safety talks every hour. These activities will highlight the days for the children.

?So far we have filled 35 spots and we have expanded into the gymnasium this year. Our television advertisements have really worked out well this year. We have gotten a lot of phone calls. One of the calls even came from a woman in Mio who is going to be bringing a van load of Amish children,? said executive director Beverly Brougham.

A chili cook-off will also take place Saturday with judging to begin at 12:30 p.m. Those interested in participating need to register with the Chamber before Nov. 23. Participants are asked to bring in four quarts of their best chili by 11:30 a.m. Chili will be placed into four different categories; traditional, non-traditional, wild game and youth cooks (18 and under).

Also on hand at the event will be the Onaway Woodcarvers, who will be doing carving and answering questions about carving. ?This is the first year they will be there and I think it should be fun,? said Brougham.

Anyone with questions, wishing to be a vendor or a participant in the chili cook-off should contact the Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce office at (989) 733-2874.
