SPORTSBEAT – The intensity of the rivalry

After the final buzzer; after Rogers City grabbed one of its 18-second half, offensive rebounds; after Posen?s David Kerr almost leaped out of his white Nikes for the half dozenth time — the intensity lingered. It was visible on the coaches? faces during post game interviews with the media. Rookie head coach Jesse Streich, who got his first victory in his first outing on the bench, was getting congratulated, but wasn?t smiling.

?You don?t look like the happiest coach, after getting your first varsity win?? I asked. ?Not really,? said Streich. ?I thought we were a little more prepared than that.? He believes the Hurons missed easy shots and they?ll have to work harder in practice to correct the problem. On the positive side, Streich said the boys made huge strides since a scrimmage at Hale Dec. 2. ?We didn?t get off the bus.? That changed in Posen, he said. ?We came out with more energy and emotion.?

POSEN COACH Steve Hentkowski was disappointed that the Vikings let Rogers City get away from them, after leading by five points, about halfway through the final quarter. He doesn?t believe Rogers City is that much better. ?They just outplayed us tonight, and they were the better team tonight. We just need to focus a lot better on rebounding.? He knows they are going to have to work harder, as there are going to be nights when other schools are going to have a height advantage.

On the positive side, Hentkowski liked the effort. ?They shouldn?t hold their heads down,? said Hentkowski. ?In any way, was this a moral victory for your club?? I a

sked. ?No,? he answered without hesitation.

IT?S ALMOST too bad these basketball rivals have to face off in the first game of the year. The stakes are kind of high and so are emotions. The players know each other and have these games circled on their schedules as games they really want to win and ?can?t lose.? Both teams played hard and treated the fans to an entertaining opener.

A FEW WEEKS ago, the Advance ran a feature story on local racer Terry Bisson. He overcame adversity to not only finish his 23rd year behind the wheel, but to finish triumphantly with his second point?s championship.

What was missing from the article was the car he pieced back together after a wreck on the Fourth of July, and has won several pretty car awards over the years. The caption in the top picture led readers to believe that was the vehicle used this season. So, here?s a picture of the car Bisson drove this season.
