Boy Scout Evan Moreau from Troop 86 of Onaway, chartered to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5857, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in boy scouting. Moreau, the son of Mike and Marisue, has completed rank requirements that cover skills in physical fitness, leadership, outdoorsmanship and civic responsibility, garnering a minimum of 21 merit badges.

In addition, as the last step to Eagle recognition, Moreau had to develop and lead a service project for the betterment of the community. His project, which took three weeks to complete last summer, was the restoration of six miles of Department of Natural Resources trails at the Ocqueoc Falls area.

?He had to reset all the posts and mark the trail,? said Marisue, who was his Cub Scout leader until Evan?s transition into Boy Scouts.

MOREAU, WHO is the sixth scout from Troop 86 to reach Eagle Scout rank since 2005, started in scouts in July 1999. Before Alan Anderson earned his Eagle Scout award in 2005 it had been 25 years since a local scout had reached the lofty plateau. ?He?s very self-motivated,? said Marisue. ?He did great.?

Moreau?s leadership positions included librarian, scribe, historian and troop guide. He officially reached the rank of Eagle Aug. 18. ?I was the youngest of a very intelligent and fun to be around group of older scouts,? said Moreau during final remarks in front of family and friends, as well as fellow scouts and leaders. ?By the time I became a Boy Scout, this close group of boys had already been around the block a few times and really knew what they needed to do to get any job done.

?This made it very fun to go with them to the various campouts that we went to, because everything was done very efficiently and with a team attitude.?

Moreau also reflected on several memorable and humorous experiences during his years in scouting.

?MY TIME in the Boy Scouts has reall

y given me a new angle on life, and has prepared me for the challenges that await in my future,? Moreau continued, ?I am very happy that I was able to achieve my Eagle, and have this valuable experience with some of my closest friends.?

While Mike and Marisue received respective pins, fellow Eagle and friend Neil Osantowski (2007) was given the mentor pin by Moreau. Leading the Court of Honor ceremony was Tom Wakefield.

Moreau is a freshman at North Central Michigan College where he received a 4.00 grade point average in his first semester. He also was the 2009 Onaway High School honor student.

His brother Kyle has earned the star rank and is looking at starting an Eagle Scout project this summer.
