Pressure ‘D’ keys win over Cards

by Richard Lamb, Advance Editor A spirited third-quarter press turned the tide in a 76-57 Huron win over Onaway Tuesday in Rogers City. Coach Jesse Streich?s team saw a 10-point second quarter lead disappear as the Cardinals cut the lead to 41-40 at the five-minute mark of the third quarter.

That is when the Hurons made a 7-0 run to put some distance between them and the visitors. Tyler Szumila?s put back and Pat Quaine?s free throw started the run and Erik Meharg ended it, first with a driving layup and next with a great pass inside to set up Jordan Bellmore?s bucket.

?We were a little sloppy on the offensive end but we converted in the end when we needed to,? Streich said. ?Onaway came to play hard, but our pressure was the key.? ONAWAY FORWARD Jan O?Bradovich, who led all scorers with 25 points, ended the rally with an inside banker, but the Hurons led 50-43 after three quarters. Rogers City extended the lead to 15 with Meharg?s three-pointer then the lead swelled to 19 after baskets by Evan Wagner and Tim Bober.

The Hurons led 19-13 after the first quarter and 37-32 at halftime. An even scoring attack keyed the win. Chris Vogelheim scored 17, Chris Waibel had 13, Meharg scored 11 and Szumila added 10. Not far behind was Bober with eight and Quaine with seven. Waibel?s eight rebounds paced the Hurons, Vogelheim had seven steals and Quaine led the team with five assists.

LAST FRIDAY the Hurons ran into a tall and talented Rudyard Bulldog squad and came out on the short end of a

71-43 score. Rudyard led 16-6 after the first quarter and stretched that into a 32-20 halftime lead. Meharg scored 11 while Bellmore added nine for Rogers City. Erik Hessilink scored 19, including his 1,000th career point, for Rudyard.

THE JUNIOR VARSITY improved to 6-2 with a 58-44 win over Onaway Tuesday. Coach Chris Shay?s squad led 17-14 after the first quarter and took a 28-23 lead at halftime. Devin Hilla?s 21 points paced the junior Hurons while Austin Brege added 12. Rudyard took a 41-36 win over Rogers City last Friday as the visitors led 10-6 after the first quarter and 17-15 at halftime.
