Tiger Scout Chaise Coss wins Pinewood Derby

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

Chaise Coss helped the Tiger Scouts of Pack 3086 win the annual Pinewood Derby for the second year in a row. It was conducted at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5857 last Saturday afternoon. Tigers Scouts are for boys just starting out in scouting.

His twin brother Michael placed fourth, so the boys fared extremely well among the 25 participants. The boys received a helping hand from Tim Lovelace and Ray Ellenberger. This is the second time the race has been conducted on a Saturday, and the numbers were up from 21. Having the race on the weekend day offers a lot more flexibility for families, who don?t need to worry so much about homework and getting their kids to bed.

This year?s derby only took a couple of hours. A new track, built as an Eagle Scout project a few years ago, has more lanes. Additionally, technology upgrades make the race go quicker and fairer.

TREVOR WREGGLESWORTH took second, Devin Shaloy third, while Luke Peters and Ian McDonald also took trophies for the most ?fuel efficient? cars, meaning the

y had the slowest vehicles.

Pinewood Derby races started in the 1950s to create a new father-activity for Cub Scouts and have been a rich part of the scouting tradition for more than a half a century. Speaking of the history of scouting, the organization will be celebrating its 100th birthday Feb. 8, less than a week before the Pack has its annual Blue and Gold banquet, Feb. 13.

Following last Saturday?s derby, a new candy sale fundraiser was launched to offset some of the costs of the banquet, where five or six young men will receive their Arrow of Light badge, the highest award in Cub Scouts.

A few weeks ago, Evan Moreau earned the highest honor in Boy Scouts by completing the requirements to become an Eagle Scout.
